Perez, Perez, Perez....

Perez Hilton has gained notoriety and fame by exploiting people’s lives. He is a notch under the paparazzi scum that infiltrates famous peoples’ lives. He created a website that epitomizes “celebrity gossip juicy celebrity rumors Hollywood gossip blog from Perez Hilton”.

I think it is very sad that someone can become “famous” and make a living writing about other people and their misfortunes, just because they are “famous”. He makes money off of advertising and gets other people to send him tips. This is very similar to sites like TMZ.com, but on a much smaller scale.

For example, Perez has been known to talk about particular celebrities, such as Britney Spears, Paris Hilton, Tara Reid and Lindsay Lohan. There is no such thing as bad publicity, right? These stars may beg to differ.

There is a clause in our charter of rights and freedom (and in the US, their constitution) that protects our right to freedom of speech. But it also states that our personal security should be protected as well. This is always not the case with the paparazzi. So why should Perez Hilton be any different? When he could possibly be ending these peoples’ careers by posting very private, comprising pictures or information, where can one draw the line?

Having a personal blog where you can vent your frustrations or voice your opinions on certain issues is great. But when you start to interfere with other peoples’ lives and livelihoods, then the issue should be addressed.

Watch this video. This guy makes a living off of this stuff. WOW.

Airport Taser Death

This is probably one of the most controversial and atrocious acts that has happened in Canada by our law enforcement. After reviewing the video of his death, I was shocked to see how they could have justified the actions they took to contain the polish immigrant.

The poor guy was sitting in the airport for 10 HOURS. I’m not sure under what basis he was being held for, but I’m pretty sure even in that length of time I could find an interpreter. And how hard is it to announce the guy’s name (it’s right on his passport….) over the intercom to see if he had any family or friends waiting for him? And I could understand his frustration and the methods he took to get peoples’ attention.

I’m not exactly sure what the standard procedure for the containment of a very frustrated and panicked immigrant by the RCMP is, but the first action they took was to the extreme. When they police arrived (and at this point, he was calm), he just raised his hands, and walked very slowly away from them. At this point, they felt it would be a good idea to taser him. Are you KIDDING me? All they had to do was ask him to put his hands behind his back, cuff him and bring him to the nearest precinct.

While being tasered, you could obviously tell he was in a great amount of pain. And one would assume a person being tortured by this pain would fight back. But would it really warrant him being tasered again, along with a police officer kneeling on his neck and head? NO.

I really hope the RCMP changes their policy for this kind of situation. I can understand airport security, but this was just inhumane and to the extreme. I feel very sorry for his mother, who had not seen her son for a very long time. And will not be able to ever again because of the procedures that the RCMP took. No compensation will bring her son back, but I hope she receives something.

The Tabs: Women and Gossip

There most definitely is a double standard when it comes to the tabloids and gossip. Women unquestionably get most of the attention.

Why, you ask? Women are the ones that actually care about what ‘famous’ people do with their lives. As a male, I really don’t care if Jennifer Aniston got a new haircut or if Lindsay Lohan is going to rehab for her 12th time. I don’t even care if they’re talking about a guy: if Owen Wilson tried to commit suicide again, I would feel sorry for him, but I wouldn’t want to keep reading it in the tabloids over and over.

Famous males are kind of expected to mess up and party. The one thing tabloid people look for in a guy that could cause any sort of controversy is a sexist/racist remark. Why does this happen? Because females want to hear and see about what happens to other females. I guess they want to see that these pretty, rich girls are just as capable to screw up as they are. Who knows?

All I know is, people, whether they are male or female, should be much more concerned with what’s going on with their own lives than other people messing up theirs. Women can keep watching and reading their tabloids, but I’ll take my Monday night football over that anyday. This young girl obviously thinks otherwise:

NBC vs APPLE

NBC seems pretty bitter. They jumped onto the Apple bandwagon, only to find out that it wasn't a good idea unless you're Apple. To be completely honest, this is wholly NBC's fault. I would hardly call this a blemish on Apple's reputation. I would solely blame chief executive Jeff Zucker.

Sure, Steve Jobs may just be a control freak. But look where that got him, right? Apple's market dominance can be compared to Microsoft's reign in the 90's. Steve Jobs kind of has the "Mida's Touch" right now - everything turns to gold!

This takes us back to Jeff Zucker. It's alright to point out some mistakes that Apple has made, but to full out bash them was not a good idea. I mean, it's bad enough to bash them. But when you start issuing untrue allegations, it just looks really bad on your part. Saying Apple has “killed the music industry in terms of pricing”? C’mon Jeff, do your research buddy!

When Zucker also states that Apple owes NBC a cut of its iPod hardware sales – you have to be kidding, right? How did this guy become the President and CEO of a company that does $16 billion in revenue?

After doing a little research on the guy, I am shocked that such an intelligent, educated man could say such public, irrational statements about such a successful company.

Zucker is going to have to make up for this. It would probably be a good idea to mend things with Apple. I would be concerned if I was a board member and Zucker continually got into confrontational situations like this, especially with powerhouses like Apple.

This was a random video I found on YouTube. Zucker, hope you find your next show (besides Heroes) really quickly!

Into Africa – China: A Superpower?

China is becoming a world superpower on many fronts: a powerful economy, enormous military, and the largest population in the world.

Recently this powerhouse has started to gain captions in North American newspapers and headlines internationally about its influential state in Africa.

But you can thank Africa’s vast amount of natural resources for this colonial expansion. This has been aiding China’s booming economic growth on an exponential level. In my opinion, this is just the beginning for China’s growth, which may be contrary to what the author of the article says.

The author claims that this may be the end of on China’s investment in Africa, stating that the Chinese have discovered that economic relations cannot be disassociated from diplomacy or good corporate behaviour. I disagree for many reasons.

China is no stranger to violence. They have had a couple of dictators in their lifetime, and so the violence that is currently wreaking havoc in Sudan is of no surprise to them. This means China is involved in the countries politics, as it is urged by the UN to allow peace troops to intervene in Africa’s most public and discomforting event in modern history: the genocide of more than 200,000 people in the past four years.

This involvement, however, has been very limited. China is attempting to please both parties. Economically, Sudan provides China with a lot of oil. Therefore, China must not interfere too much in Africa’s politics if they want to maintain a healthy economic trade. This has led to China’s inactivity towards the UN’s Security Council’s effort to aid civilians in Sudan. To give the Chinese government some credit, they did convince Al-Bashir to let some peacekeepers into Sudan.

So far the neutral position China has adopted has worked in their favour. $60 billion worth of trade occurred this year alone. They have become a superpower in Africa; there is no doubt about it. Whether or not Africa’s political state is positively supported in the meantime, however, is a different story.

It is sad that Africa is in the negative political situation it is in right now. It is a shame that things in this video, below, still occur in our world today, yet cannot be stopped because of political and economic reasons.

Sex and Marriage with Robots?

Are you kidding me?

There’s a saying out there saying, “Don’t knock it ‘till you try it”. Pretty sure even this statement would not apply here. I completely disagree with the fact a human being could legally be married to an object that other humans have created.

Sure you could have “sex” with Jessica Simpson or Brad Pitt. But who are you fooling? It’s not a celebrity you’re getting off with, it’s a creation. It’s made with synthetic material!

I don’t care how shy or ugly you think you are, there is someone out there for you. Someone with a pulse, not a bunch of wires and computer chips. That’s right, someone that can actually feel emotions like love.

There is even some enjoyment and “challenge” in attracting someone of the opposite sex. The feeling of success from attracting that person can be a tremendous ego boost. But if you know that the “hot” robot was programmed to “love” you, wouldn’t that make you feel sort of pathetic? You want someone to love you because they truly mean it, not because they were programmed that way.

The “love” people could have for these robots could change our human social dynamics so completely, that perhaps it would even be hard to distinguish who are robots in the first place? Can you imagine entering a club, seeing an attractive person dancing, only to find out later that it was a robot? It’s kind of like seeing animals and having sexual urges. Sure animals are capable of having sex with humans, but would you like to see, or even imagine, having sex with them? Most definitely, NOT. That is just wrong on so many levels.

This could even fuel sexual predators to commit more crimes if they get used to doing child robots. As wrong as that sounds, it is certainly a possibility. What makes it even worse is that someone created this child robot with the ability to even have sex.

There are so many more negative aspects to having robots that humans could be attracted to, or even marry, that it is not worth introducing to society. Not in this manner at least. My respect level for my human counterparts would definitely be destroyed if this concept for robots was introduced.

For example, look at this guy. Tell me you don't find this ridiculously creepy. Now imagine if these dolls were robots? Could talk, move, "love"? It could get seriously creepy.

Voters Reject MMP

I’m all for changing our electoral voting process. Clearly I’m not happy with the way things turned out with this referendum.

Why?

First off, I’m legally of age to vote in Canada. However, I heard nothing about a referendum for changing our electoral process in Ontario. It was news to me the day before the election. I’m pretty aware of things that occur to Canadians, not only locally, but nationally as well. To be honest, the referendum was not publicized enough! Who do I blame for that? Election’s Ontario.

Apparently, millions were spent on the ‘advertising’ and ‘awareness campaigns’ that they executed. But when you have people at the polls asking what it’s about, obviously not enough people were notified efficiently.

Sure, you can spend millions of dollars in advertising and gaining awareness.. But you have to do it effectively. These words that start with ‘e’ are pretty accurate for something Election’s Ontario didn’t do, right? That’s a lot of dough to dish out for such poor results.

I bet that most people out of the 63% of Ontarians that rejected the vote did so because they didn’t know what the referendum was about!! Next election, I would like to see more people notified about the way our electoral process works. I really hope that more Canadians (especially Ontarians) can be sufficiently notified and educated on what’s happening in Canada.

This was pretty funny stuff. Politicians do make for good comedy!

Halo 3 - Is It Worth The Hype?

I must be crazy. Or maybe it’s just because I don’t own an XBOX 360. The thing is, I’m one of the few, young males that does not think Halo 3 is worth all the hype.

I mean, it’s hard to argue with this. Personally, a story line consisting of an alien species attacking, and very intent on destroying planet Earth due to religious reasons seems so 1999. Not to mention, when your main character’s name is “Master Chief”…. C’mon, you could’ve picked a more masculine, alpha male name than that.

I’m not a huge gamer, but I’ve played my fair share of video games (Not that I would like to admit that, but my excuse is that I was young…. and bored). I’ve always been partial towards computer games: using a mouse is key. So much easier to point and click when you shoot a weapon than use a complicated double joystick on a console game like the XBOX 360. When I did in fact play the Halo series, I wasn’t really impressed. It seems like any other First Person Shooter (FPS), just with a worse storyline. Personally, a series like Call of Duty is much better. It’s based off of WWII all the way to modern war fighting. Not only is the storyline much better, but your enemies are human too. Fighting hokey aliens gets boring quickly. I mean , here's the trailer.

Personally, I thought it was kind of boring.

The only really good thing I find about Halo 3 is the multiplayer function. There are a lot of people online, and its fun to play against friends. But realistically, there are so many games you can do that now (i.e. Call of Duty) anyways, so why the hype? Why the huge fan base?

Personally, I think it comes from the original Halo and XBOX system. The original XBOX didn’t really have any good games. Until Halo came out, there was nothing. Hence, why Microsoft loses money with the gaming console annually. Finally, when a half-decent game came out, everyone jumped on the bandwagon. People played this game non-stop.

It’s the same thing with Halo 3, except there is now a larger fan base. More people jumping on the bandwagon; I’ll admit, it’s kind of tempting to play JUST because the fact all my friends play it! But I don’t want to end up like some of the people that get just a little too excited when the new sequel comes out, you know what I mean?

The Greatest Hamiltonian

At first, I was inclined to pick George Hamilton as the greatest Hamiltonian. After all, he did found the city, right?

Well, the name of the article is “The Greatest Hamiltonian”. I hardly think it’s fair if George automatically got the title, don’t you?

In my opinion, the title should go to *drum roll*:

Ron Joyce.

Some of you may think I’m crazy. An ex-cop? A donut shop founder?

Sure, he wasn’t born in Hamilton, but who can control where they were born anyways? Not only did he serve on Hamilton’s police force, protecting our streets and ensuring the well-being of people, he entered a franchise partnership with another great Canadian hockey player, Tim Horton.

He is a prime example of how a normal person can do extraordinary things. I chose Ron Joyce because of his great business ability. He is a person I can aspire to, especially as I am in the Commerce faculty.

He bought out the franchise partnership when an untimely accident killed Tim Horton. He was basically the driving force behind the incredible growth of the franchise that has gained a fantastic reputation as one of the best coffee shops in North America.

He is also a great philanthropist. He has created the Tim Hortons Children Foundation, sending thousands of underprivileged children to camp each year. This even earned him the Gary Wright Humanitarian Award in 1991, which is obtainable periodically in recognition of the outstanding contributions to the betterment of community life throughout Canada. The recognition he has achieved has been primarily for his work with the Foundation, which he has received the Order of Canada, an extremely prestigious award that recognizes a lifetime of distinguished service in or to a particular community, group or field of activity – AKA Hamilton.

He has also donated to McMaster University – twice! $10 million dollars went towards the new sports stadium and $10 million dollars more went towards the new Burlington campus, which will be the expansion of the business program.

Ron Joyce is what I consider probably the greatest Hamiltonian. He was an average Joe that went on to do great things, and ended up helping a lot of people along the way, especially for his community, Hamilton. You can’t get much better than that.

The HPV Vaccine

To me, this is not as much a moral issue as it is a scientific one. This one is a no-brainer: If you have a daughter, wouldn’t you do everything in your power as a parent to keep her safe?

If one needle can prevent a sexually transmitted virus that could eventually cultivate cancer, wouldn’t it be wise to try and protect your daughter, especially if it is offered for free at your child’s school?

The one thing I agree with in the article is the fear of the scientific side effects. This program was implemented very quickly and we don’t know all the side effects. However, how many drugs can we say that we know all the negative side effects? Not many.

In the article, there is a mother saying that the vaccine has not been around long enough. She continues by saying that “people should do their own research” and “we can’t just trust the medical community to know what’s best for our children”. Are you kidding me? So this mother is basically saying that people should hop onto the internet, look up information on Wikipedia and form their own opinion on the drug’s safety? If you can’t trust our doctors and the medical community, who have spent years gaining knowledge and experience about how to treat our medical problems…. Who can you trust!?

The people saying it is a moral issue and that the vaccine promotes sexual promiscuity: that is just ridiculous! As a responsible parent, you must educate your children to be safe. You can’t control when or who they choose to have sex, but it is important for them to be educated about the repercussions.

That being said, sexual activity is not the only way a person can contract HPV. You can be infected simply through environmental or casual skin-to-skin contact. If it is that easy to contract HPV, why is there such a huge hype about sexual promiscuity?

Throughout our society, mass communication (through TV, the internet, etc.) has made it quite easy to spread ideas. This has both negative and positive connotations. For example, we see a lot of openness about sex in the media; however, we also see a lot of advertising for positive health functions.

However, if mass communication keeps showing clips like THIS. Then we’re all in a lot of trouble. Role models should not look like that.

And yes, this article is being written by a guy, and I’m not the one at risk for cervical cancer. However, I would like to be a father someday. If I were to have a daughter, and this vaccine was available, but I chose not to give my consent as a parent because it may “promote promiscuity”, and she contracted HPV, can you imagine how guilty I would feel?

I discovered this video on YouTube. I found this pretty entertaining.

Hello World!

This is the first post for the CMST 1A03 blog evalutions.
